Millville man gets 22 years in 2014 killing

  • News
A Millville man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison in the 2014 killing of a Port Norris man. Benjamin Broughton, 29, was shot once in the face during an altercation in front of his home March 22, 2014. Errick Young, 23, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in October, with the plea open, meaning his sentencing would proceed as if he had been convicted, Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae explained. Young faced 10 to 30 years in prison. Senior Assistant Prosecutor Michael Ostrowski urged Judge Robert Malestein to sentence Young to more than the mid-range of 20 years. Seven of the victim's loved ones spoke at the sentencing, talking of the impact his passing had on them, according to a news release from the Prosecutor's Office. Young had no prior adult criminal record when the then-20-year-old shot Broughton during a domestic altercation, according to the charges. But the state cited his readiness with a loaded gun and flight after the killing as reasons for a longer term. Young must serve just more than 18 years and eight months before he is eligible for parole. He then will have an additional five years of parole supervision.
