Former Atlantic City basketball star arrested on gun, drug charges

  • News

A former Atlantic City basketball star and South Carolina state point guard was arrested on gun and drug charges earlier this month.
Khalif Toombs, 28, is charged with heroin possession and distribution, along with possession of a weapon, possession of hollow-point bullets and possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense, after a month-long investigation led by Detective William Warner.
Toombs was a starter for four years on the Bull Dogs, according to the South Carolina State website. He also is a coach in the city working with youth.
Toombs and James Tolbert, also 28, were arrested April 4, when SWAT team members searched two homes: one on the 1900 block of Hummock Avenue in Atlantic City and the other in the 100 block of Dunlin Lane in Egg Harbor Township, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
In the searches they found a handgun loaded with hollow-point ammunition, heroin and assorted packaging materials, according to the police report.
Two vehicles were also seized because they were used to distribute narcotics, Fair said.
Tolbert was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
Both men were released on summonses.
