Fire at closed Atlantic City motel is 'suspicious,' chief says

  • News
A fire at a closed Atlantic City motel that was recently the focus of a raid is suspicious, according to the fire chief. The blaze, which was contained mostly to one unit, comes just days after a drug investigation led to the removal of more than 30 people — and an alligator —staying at the Bayview Inn on Albany Avenue. It was not clear if anyone was still staying there after multiple agencies were part of a raid that saw
the arrest of Jamal Campos on charges he led a drug-trafficking network and sold the fentanyl-heroin mix that killed an Egg Harbor Township man in 2016. Six others were also arrested on unrelated warrants. Firefighter Richard Luft was on his way to work Saturday morning when he saw smoke coming from the motel and called 911, Chief Scott Evans said. Firefighters arrived to find one unit fully involved, with flames extending to the units above and the exposures on either side, he said. The investigation is ongoing.
