Kauffman makes brief court appearance

  • News
The weapons charge against Dr. James Kauffman is headed to a grand jury. The Egg Harbor Township doctor who pulled a gun when detectives came to his office with a search warrant in June had a brief court appearance Tuesday.
James Kauffman's wife, Carol Weintraub, speaks with attorney Patrick Joyce before the hearing. There have been no offers made in the case. The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office has until Sept. 13 to get an indictment, said attorney Patrick Joyce, who was representing Kauffman while attorney Ed Jacobs in in trial in Camden. Joyce told BreakingAC he believes the grand jury presentation is scheduled for early September. The endocrinologist has been jailed since June 13, after he threatened to shoot himself when a far-reaching medical fraud investigation brought law enforcement to his office on Ocean Heights Avenue. He was arrested on weapons charges. There have been no charges in the other investigation. A Linwood officer's body camera caught the standoff, and was cited as the reason Judge Bernard DeLury ordered him detained until trial. An appellate panel also named the video in upholding the judge's decision. Joyce said his office is in the process of a state Supreme Court appeal of the detention, but that likely won't be decided until after a decision on Kauffman's indictment. The 68-year-old doctor looked older than previous court appearances, his hair now white. His new wife, Carol Weintraub, was in court but did not speak. Kauffman's wife, April, was fatally shot in their Linwood home five years ago. That crime has never been solved. Weeks before his arrest, the widower was in court fighting a motion to compel his DNA as part of that investigation. The search warrant also included mention of a homicide, Jacobs has said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW6HwcsMbas
