Arraignment set for Dr. Kauffman in gun, obstruction case

  • News
Dr. James Kauffman's arraignment on gun and obstruction charges has been postponed. The Egg Harbor Township doctor is now expected to be arraigned Sept. 28, a week after the original date given. Kauffman was arrested June 13
, after pulling a gun and threatening to shoot himself when investigators came to his office off Ocean Heights Avenue with a search warrant. A grand jury indicted him Sept. 6 on two charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, and one count each of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and obstructing the administration of law. Search warrants were also served at Kauffman's homes, including the Linwood house where his then-wife April Kauffman was found killed May 10, 2012. The homicide has never been solved. Investigators came to his office looking for files and other evidence as part of a much larger investigation into prescription fraud. The case has already seen five people plead guilty, admitting to millions in fraudulent charges for prescriptions. Unlike other search warrants, Kauffman's also mentioned homicide. The investigation is separate from the one into his wife's killing, but could be helped, those close to the case have said. Kauffman was ordered to remain jailed until his case goes to trial. An appellate court upheld that decision. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW6HwcsMbas
