Man accused in April Kauffman's killing is looking for a lawyer

  • News
The only man facing charges in the killing of April Kauffman is looking for a lawyer. But without money to do so, he had taken a different tack. After GoFundMe removed his page seeking money for legal representation, Freddy Augello has now reached out directly to his friends on Facebook. “To whom it may concern, I find myself in the beginning of what is becoming a national media case, producing interests from the likes of ABC, 20-20, along with well-known blogger sites,” reads a post on his Facebook page. “Presently, I am interested in speaking with legal representation capable of this style of endeavor. If you or your firm would have interest in a case of this magnitude please contact me through the mail address I've provided. Or simply leave your phone number on my Instant Messenger.” Augello does not have access to public media from his cell in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, but his daughter is passing on his messages through his page, sources have told BreakingAC. She has not returned requests for comment. In other posts Augello bemoans his treatment in the media, where he says he’s already been convicted.

“Since the arrest I have been systematically ruined in the media, which includes my general character, professional sign business and music career, spanning several decades,” he wrote in a separate post. “I have pleaded not guilty on all charges. Despite this, I have already been convicted in the media, which is the result of a well-orchestrated media circus, promoted by a politically jealous prosecution.” But, he adds, “I will continue to use the FREE press and any media sources as is my right as an American Citizen…” Augello is accused of setting up Kauffman’s killing with her husband, Dr. James Kauffman, to protect an Oxycontin ring the two were allegedly running. After the group was charged Jan. 9, Augello was additionally charged with trying to have James Kauffman killed in jail to keep him from talking. Kauffman was moved to the Hudson County jail for protection. He died there 17 days later, from what officials have said was a suicide.| The man the two allegedly hired, Frank Mulholland,
later died of a heroin overdose. Augello currently has two lawyers assigned to his case through the Public Defenders Office due to its complex nature, BreakingAC was previously told. But he wants a private attorney, which he can’t afford. It was unclear if anyone has responded to his request for help. Indictments have not yet been announced against Augello or his co-defendants in the drug ring. The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office has 90 days from their charges to indict them. It's been about 83 days. Augello's GoFundMe asking for help with legal fees was taken down by the company.
