Mays Landing man pleads guilty in killing of Good Samaritan

  • News
A Mays Landing man admitted to killing a man who tried to stop him from beating his girlfriend. Calvin Wiggins, 24, pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated manslaughter in the death of John Charlton, 55, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said Friday. Wiggins was allegedly hitting his girlfriend Nov. 2, 2017, along Route 40, across the street from his mother's home near Cantillion Boulevard when Charlton drove by. Charlton got out of his car and came over, yelling at Wiggins to stop. That's when Wiggins turned around and punched Charlton, who fell to the ground and was knocked unconscious. He died 10 days later, never regaining consciousness.

The two are now engaged. She has called Charlton a hero. “If it wasn’t for him, Calvin might not have stopped hitting me,” she said in an interview with BreakingAC shortly after Charlton died. “He is definitely a hero to me and Calvin. Calvin is where he needs to be. Where he can get the help he needs.” Wiggins, who was on parole for second-degree robbery at the time of the attack, had a confrontation with a Resorts Atlantic City security guard about a week before the fatal incident, Freeman said. Wiggins faces a 13-year sentence under the plea agreement. He is scheduled for sentencing before Aug. 17 before Superior Court Judge John Rauh. He has been jailed since the incident. https://breakingac.com/2017/11/woman-rescued-by-good-samaritan-says-there-is-more-to-her-story/
