Miss America says goodbye to swimsuit competition

  • News
Goodbye, bathing suits. Your reign is over. Miss America, which has long-stressed it's a scholarship competition about talent and brains, is getting rid of the swimsuit portion, the organization announced Tuesday on the "Today" show. “We are no longer a pageant," said former Miss America turned organization Chair Gretchen Carlson. "Miss America will represent a new generation of female leaders focused on scholarship, social impact, talent and empowerment.” In its place will be a live interaction with the judges that will "highlight her achievements and goals in life and how she will use her talents, passion and ambition to perform the job of Miss America," the pageant said. Evening gown will also be altered with the competitors can choose their own attire while discussing how they will advance their social impact initiatives.
