Atlantic City loitering call leads to gun, drugs

  • News
An Atlantic City man was arrested On gun and drug charges after police searched a car he claimed wasn't his. Officers Anthony Abrams and Alberto Valles were called to the 1300 block of Magellan Avenue at 7:10 p.m. for a group of men loitering and shooting dice, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. It was the second response within an hour, Fair said. The officers saw several men standing in front of a parked car. The group dispersed as they saw the officers, but someone stayed inside the car, according to the report. Abrams knocked on the passenger side window and Van Grasty quickly got out from the driver’s seat, and started to walk away saying it wasn't his car. The license plate on the car was fictitious and did not match the vehicle. As Abrams opened the glove box looking for the registration, Grasty yelled for the officer to get out of his car, Fair said. He then quickly recanted, saying it wasn't his car. A bag stuffed in the glove box had attempted to identify the owner through the registration or insurance card. He opened the glove box and Grasty yelled at Officer Abrams to get out of his car, but then recanted and said it was not his car. Police would later learn the car was registered to his mother. A bag inside the glove box had a loaded handgun, 42 grams of cocaine, 118 MDMA/ecstasy pills, hollow-point ammunition and packaging used to distribute narcotics, according to the report. Grasty, 26, was arrested on charges of two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within a school zone, possession with intent to distribute within a park zone, possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of a weapon while committing a CDS offense, certain person not to possess a weapon, possession of CDS paraphernalia and an active warrant. He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
