A.C. Beach Patrol rescued three after hours on the Fourth

  • News
The Atlantic City Beach Patrol rescued three victims after dark on the Fourth of July.
Lt. Michael Sykes was getting ready to leave the beach just after 9 p.m. when he decided to scan the area one last time and noticed someone in the water near the Tennessee Avenue jetty, Atlantic City Police Lt. Ed Leon said.
Sykes called police communications before heading into the water with Lt. Vince Granese and Lifeguards Andrew Light and James Muller, Leon said.
They pulled two juveniles out of the water as additional off-duty guards Mark Giannini, Taylor Dirks, Tyler Flynn and Harley Dillingsworth helped search for the adult Sykes had seen. Some of the guards were in their civilian clothes, Leon noted.
Lifeguards Pete Egnor and Matt Brown came from a neighboring district with a personal watercraft, along with multiple off-duty guards who were on the beach and learned of the incident, Leon said.
The man and two juveniles were rescued and treated by emergency medical services on the scene.
Atlantic City police and the Fire Department’s Water Rescue Unit also responded to assist.
Sykes called it a true team effort in adverse conditions and with low visibility.
