EHT man who allegedly made an explosive device will remain jailed

Vaino's Florida Department of Corrections entry shows him about 1½ years into his three years' probation. It also indicates he moved to another state. An Egg Harbor Township man accused of creating an improvised explosive device will remain jailed in Atlantic County. Robert Vaino, 42, did not fight his detention, since he would wind up jailed regardless. He is on probation from a 2015 aggravated assault with a weapon charged in Florida, and would have been extradited and held there on the violation if he was not detained here, attorney Mary Linehan told the judge. If the Florida status changes, Linehan told Superior Court Judge Patricia Wild that she may make a motion for a new detention hearing.

Police were called to Vaino’s home in the township’s Cardiff section Aug. 1, after his wife called police and said there was an explosive in the home, according to information released in court Wednesday. She told police her husband showed her the device about a week and a half earlier, saying it was loaded with metal fragments and “he’d like to see what he could do with it,” according to the police report read into the record. The woman said she saw the device sitting on a shelf above her husband when he was sitting in the garage, and called police. She told them she also believed he had black powder, which the report indicates was found. The Atlantic City Bomb Squad dismantled the IED, the report said. Vaino is charged with possession of a destructive device, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and harassment.
