Galloway couple arrested in aggravated assault on 2-year-old daughter

A Galloway Township couple was arrested Friday after an investigation into the aggravated assault on their toddler daughter.
The 2-year-old girl had to be flown to Cooper University Hospital on July 10, after she began having a series of seizures as a result of the assault, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.
Physical and psychological traumas put the girl’s diagnosis at “the level of torture,” a medical evaluation found.
Yolanda Torres, 33, blamed multiple bone fractures, brain bleeding and deep burns to the girl’s hand and foot on a series of accidents, according to the report.
But an investigation by detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Galloway Township Police Department led to the arrest of Torres and 52-year-old Jose Velez.
Torres assaulted the girl July 10, according to the charges.
While in the couple’s custody, the girl lost weight and some of her hair, and a failure to thrive.
Torres is charged with second-degree aggravated assault. She and Velez were also charged with two counts each of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
When Velez was arrested, he allegedly had Xanax pills, and was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession with intent to distribute.
