Atlantic City standoff ends with Delaware fugitives in custody

  • News

A Delaware couple who have been on the run nearly two months were arrested in Atlantic City, after an hours-long standoff Wednesday.
Rahiem Jackson, 23, and Maya Hairston, 24, both of Dover, have been wanted in a firearms investigation since May 6, after leading police on a chase across the state line into Maryland, according to a news releaser by Dover police at the time.
The two wound up at a home in the 100 block of North Georgia Avenue, where the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force had traced them Wednesday morning.
That led to a standoff, during which roads were closed as members of the SWAT Team, crisis negotiators and the Bomb Squad descended on the area.
Nearby residents were either evacuated or told to stay in their homes, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
After almost two hours talking to crisis negotiators, Hairston surrendered and was taken into custody, Fair said.
Negotiators tired several more hours to engage Jackson, but were unsuccessful, Fair said.
So, SWAT entered the residence at about 1:15 p.m., and found Jackson hiding under a kitchen sink, according to the report.
He was taken into custody without incident, Fair said.
Police previously said weapons were recovered, but Fair told BreakingAC that "a further examination by Forensics Unit detectives revealed the gun to be a replica."
The Atlantic City Fire Department, Exceptional Medical Transportation of Atlantic City and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office assisted in the investigation.
Both were taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility on fugitive warrants.
“The teamwork displayed by all of the first responders was incredible,” said Interim Officer in Charge James Sarkos. “Two dangerous fugitives were removed from the streets without any injuries to law enforcement or the suspects. This is a great example of the ongoing working relationships and collaborations the ACPD has with all of our public safety partners.”
Dover police previously charged Jackson with two count of probation violation and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
Hairston has charges of resisting arrest and disregarding a police officer's signal.
