Man accused of fleeing Atlantic City crash with gun ordered held

  • News

A Philadelphia man who was allegedly armed and intoxicated when he fled an Atlantic City crash that injured two pedestrians was ordered held in jail Tuesday.
Derek Wiley, 22, is charged with 11 counts, including aggravated assault, assault by auto and weapons offenses.
Wiley was allegedly speeding on Route 40, when he tried to pass another car on the shoulder and went onto the sidewalk, striking the two men.
One of them men was left bloody with bone and muscle exposed, and had to be put on life support, according to the information given in court Tuesday. His current condition was not given.
Wiley continued driving until the car gave out, then he and his passenger ran, according to the charges.
They were stopped on the Albany Avenue bridge.
Surveillance video then showed Wiley ditching a gun under a parked car. Police later recovered it.
While the public safety assessment used to help determine if a defendant should be held recommended his release, Superior Court Judge Joseph Levin disagreed.
He noted it didn't take into account several factors, noting Wiley had a pending case in Philadelphia at the time of his arrest.
Wiley also was recently shot in both legs in an incident in Philadelphia, according to his defense attorney.
Levin also noted Wiley's extensive juvenile history that included aggravated assault and eluding, which is among the current allegations.
Wiley now will remain jailed pending the outcome of his case.
