Potential gmail hack shuts down Atlantic City schools internet

  • News

The Atlantic City School District is without internet after the system was shut down Thursday morning to handle an issue with Google passwords, BreakingAC has confirmed.
Staff first received word just before 7 a.m. that there was a "Google password issue."
About an hour later, a second notification told staff that the internet would be down and to advise students.
"Email is operational via phone or outside the district," the email said. "We will communicate information via email."
A third email sent just after 8:30 a.m. advised all staff to shut down their computers.
Staff again was told communication would through email that could be accessed via phone or outside the district internet.
Several staff confirmed to BreakingAC that when teachers tried logging into their gmail accounts for work they were told their passwords had been changed hours earlier. The timeline seems to be around 1 a.m.
Atlantic City is on a hybrid system, where some students are in school and others virtual.
Those who are learning virtually can log in, but teachers who are inside the schools cannot access them, sources say.
A call to the administration was not immediately returned.
