Pedestrian, 77, fatally struck on BHP in Atlantic City

  • News

A pedestrian died Tuesday after being struck by a car on the Black Horse Pike in Atlantic City.
Police were called to the eastbound lanes of Route 40 mile marker 62.4 at 9:23 p.m., Lt. Kevin Fair said.
They arrived to find a 77-year-old female pedestrian dead.
The driver, 56-year-old Michael Ortiz, stopped and remained at the scene, Fair said. The Atlantic City man was then taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
It appears the woman was trying to climb over the concrete median when she was struck, according to an initial investigation by Officer Eric Knuttel.
The woman's name is not being released since next of kin has not been located, Fair said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation with assistance from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
The crash and investigation blocked traffic for several hours.
Anyone with information is asked to call Atlantic City police at 609-347-5744. Information may also be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411), beginning the text with ACPD.
