Atlantic City woman admits to stealing thousands in welfare fraud

  • News
An Atlantic City woman pleaded guilty this week to illegally collecting more than $18,000 in welfare benefits from 2009 to 2012. Evonda Valentine, now 50, claimed children who did not live with her as dependents in order to collect Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Food Stamp benefits from the Atlantic County Department of Family and Community Development, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner announced Wednesday. In exchange for her plea to theft by deception, Valentine will pay restitution to the state and be subject to a period of probation when she is sentenced by Judge Michael Blee on May 19. Valentine has a previous drug conviction from 2006, court records show.
