Ousted Atlantic City police officer one of two defendants found with 5,250 bags of heroin

  • News
A long-ago disgraced Atlantic City police officer was one of two men found with more than 5,200 bags of heroin last week. Michael Stewart, 58, appeared briefly in court Thursday. He was scheduled for a detention hearing, but that was postponed until Jan. 4. Stewart has been a police officer for about six years when he was first arrested back in 1989, in a drug-dealing case, court records show. He lost his job as part of a plea deal, and has spent the past 27 years racking up several drug charges and at least two prison stays, according to court records. On Friday, Stewart was driving in the area of 1300 Baltic Avenue, where police were investigating tips from concerned residents about drug activity, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. Detectives Brian Hambrecht and Will Herrerias found Stewart with seven bricks of heroin, or 350 individual bags, according to the report. His passenger, 46-year-old Peter Whitted, had 11 bricks of heroin, or 550 individual bags. A search of the vehicle recovered 87 more bricks — at 50 bags per brick. The total recovered was 5,250. There is body camera footage of the arrest, defense attorneys for both men indicated in court Thursday. Their detention hearings were postponed to allow their lawyers to go over them. https://breakingac.com/ac-police-arrest-two-recover-5200-bags-of-heroin/
