One of the Camden County police officers heralded as heroes for a fiery crash rescue was critically injured in a hit-and-run Thursday night.
Joseph Mair, who goes by Ryan, is a Hammonton High School graduate and once worked security at an Atlantic City casino.
While working Thursday night, Mair heard a crash and got out of his marked patrol car to investigate when he was struck, police said.
Mair, 32, was run over the by the suspect's tires, and suffered significant injuries to his hips and legs, police said.
He is in the intensive care unit.
The suspect identified by 6ABC as a 60-year-old taxi driver was taken into custody, the station reported.
Mair downplayed his role in the rescue in an interview with BreakingAC this week, stressing it was a group effort.
"I'm don't really like the spotlight," he said.
