Atlantic City police elevated 10 former Class II officers to full-time and will supplement that class with 22 recruits, including one who will make history.
The 10 newly full-time officers are Isaiah Johnson, Heriberto Barrios-Gomez, Josue Rodriguez, Dylan Imbrenda, Scott Crawford, Rizwan Bakhat, Christopher Colon, Ivaylo Penchev, Erica Britko, and Jordyn Bowden
They will be assigned to the Operations Division, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
The Special Law Enforcement Officers Class II ranks will also be increased, with 22 recruits starting training at the Atlantic County Police Training Center on Dec. 6, Fair said.
The group includes the first Muslim woman who will wear a hijab on duty.
“Today’s swearing-in has a historical significance for our department,” Interim Officer in Charge James Sarkos said. “The ACPD recently amended the uniform policy to allow police officers to wear a hijab or religious headscarf. We believe that this slight change will create a more inclusive police force and help recruit those that otherwise would not have considered our police department.”
The ceremony was held at the Atlantic City Convention Center with Mayor Marty Small administering the oath of office.
The Class II recruits will go through 27 weeks of training.
