An Atlantic City child is in juvenile detention after he allegedly bit a police officer while resisting arrest Thursday.
Officer Troy Grams noticed what appeared to be a handgun in the 12-year-old's waistband as he was walking into a convenience store in the 600 block of New York Avenue, according to the report.
Grams followed the boy into the store and saw him standing at the counter. When the child saw the officer, he tried to flee through an employee area toward the back door, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
Grams tried to stop the child, and was pushed away, according to the report. The boy continued to fight Grams while trying to reach for the gun in his waistband.
The boy bit the officer, causing an injury to his hand, Fair said.
Grams was able to place the preteen in custody with help from Officer Eric O’Neill-Knuttel.
The gun was dislodged during the struggle, and was found inside the child's pant leg.
He is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.
He is in the Harborfields Detention Facility.
