Two fast charges for electronic vehicles were installed behind the Ventnor library off New Haven Avenue.
Ventnor installed two new electric-vehicle charging stations in the parking lot behind the library on New Haven Avenue, and introduced an ordinance establishing overtime fees.
No one is permitted to park at Level 2 or 3 charging stations unless they are getting their electrical vehicle charged.
The ordinance revision establishes a $25 flat fee for exceeding the one-hour limit required to fully charge a vehicle. A 30-minute grace period is permitted at no cost, but after 90 minutes at the charging station, motorists risk being charged the additional fee for overtime parking.
The overtime parking fee will also be charged for exceeding the four-hour time limit to charge a vehicle at the Level 2 charging station installed on Ocean Avenue behind City Hall last year.
A public hearing on the ordinance will be held 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.
One of two charges behind Ventnor City Hall is for the Code Enforcement Department's vehicle.Mayor Tim Kriebel said one of the two chargers behind City Hall is reserved for the electric vehicle used by the Code Enforcement Department.
“But the public uses the other one all the time,” he said. “People can find charging stations by checking online.”
The pavement clearly marks which one is available to the public and which one is reserved for official city use only.
The public charger outside Ventnor City Hall is clearly marked.The fee charged for the Level 2 charging station, which can provide 15 to 20 miles of range for each hour of charging, is $1.75 per hour for as long as four hours.
The fee charged at the Level 3 charging station, which can provide a full charge with a range of near 200 miles in 20 to 60 minutes, is 35 cents per kilowatt hour for as long as one hour.
Ventnor was awarded grant funds to cover a portion of the $275,000 cost of installing infrastructure, the charging stations and purchasing electric vehicles, including $150,000 from the state Board of Public Utilities and $75,000 from the Department of Environmental Protection.
Atlantic City Electric also provided incentives.
Eight chargers are planned for Ventnor Plaza shopping center.
Motorists can download the ChargePoint app to their smart phones to manage payment and find where other stations are located. The app also provides information noting if the charging station is currently in use or if it is available.
