Atlantic City 'Mamas' Mixer' honors Black Maternal Health Week

  • Community

Atlantic City will host a mixer Friday focusing on the maternal health of Black women.

Black Maternal Health Week, which was created to address disparities in health care, is marked from April 11 to 17 each year.

The first annual Mamas' Mixer is a networking event that invites community members, advocates, healthcare professionals and local leader to connect and engage in meaningful conversations about improving Black maternal health outcomes.

Black women are significantly more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than any other ethnic group, statistics show.

The maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women rose from 49.5 in to 50.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control's National Vital Statistics System comparing 2022 to 2023, the most recent year available.

That is more than twice the mortality rate of white women at 14.5 per 100,000, down from a rate of 19 the previous year. The deaths also were down for Hispanic women —16.9 to 12.4 — and Asian women — 13.2 to 10.7.

The Mamas' Mixer will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Beat the Daily Grind, 3807 Atlantic Ave.

The event is sponsored by the city's CDBG, and Health and Human Services departments.

There will be light refreshments, inspiring dialogue, and the opportunity to celebrate and support the mamas and maternal health champions making a difference in the community, according to the announcement.
