Several local law enforcement agencies were running for a cause Friday.
They joined in the 42nd annual Law Enforcement Torch Run that raises awareness for the Special Olympics of New Jersey Summer Games held this past weekend.
More than 3,000 officers throughout the state took to the streets, traversing 26 separate routes to carry the Flame of Hope nearly 750 miles.
The trip started at Caesars Casino in Atlantic City to the Absecon ShopRite to the Galloway Diner to Hammonton, and ending at the Camden waterfront.
Two Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office detectives followed the entire county route in a van with water and bananas donated by the Absecon ShopRite.
Special Olympics New Jersey provides year-round sports training, competition, leadership opportunities and health screenings to 22,000 athletes and Unified Partners. All of these programs and services are always completely free thanks to fundraising events like the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Participants included police from Atlantic City, Margate, Pleasantville, and Hamilton, Egg Harbor and Galloway townships, along with the Atlantic County Sheriff's and Prosecutor's offices.
The officers are known as the Guardians of the Flame.
