Atlantic City police Department are warning the community of a scam where the caller pretends to be member of the Police Department.
A resident reported being called by someone claiming to be a detective, and saying the resident had an active warrant and needed to turn herself in or she would be arrested at her residence, according to the report.
The number was spoofed to look like it was coming from the department's non-emergency phone number to the Communications Unit, Capt. Kevin Fair said. Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to caller ID display to disguise their identity.
The "detective" then told the woman that an alternative to arrest would be to purchase items off the internet.
A member of the Police Department will never call and ask someone to turn themselves in or to purchase items like gift cards to avoid arrest, the warning states.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Section at 609-347-5766. Information also may be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411), beginning the text with ACPD.
