One COVID-19 death, 40 newly confirmed cases in Atlantic County

  • Covid 19

A 97-year-old woman who lived at a long-term care center in Absecon is the latest coronavirus-related death in Atlantic County, public health officials said Sunday. The woman had pre-existing conditions that made her more susceptible, according to the report. While the county release doesn't mention the facility by name, there is only one such facility in the town: Preferred Care at Absecon, formerly Absecon Manor. There have now been 49 deaths in the county, with 198 others listed as recovered. The county also announced 40 newly confirmed cases, bringing the total to 1,099.

The cases include 24 men, ages 33 to 98 and 16 women, ages 24 to 92. Thirteen new positives were found in Northfield, nine in Galloway, five in Atlantic City and four each in Hammonton and Pleasantville.

Two new cases were confirmed in Egg Harbor Township. Absecon and Hamilton Township each had one new case.

Corbin City, which had been the only Atlantic County municipality without an instance of COVID-19, also had its first confirmed case.

The county already had tested nearly 700 residents, with 27.1 percent testing positive. The statewide rate has been more than 40 percent.

Atlantic County will have additional drive-thru testing dates for next Tuesday and Thursday, which are by appointment only and require symptoms and a doctor's prescription. They will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing. Those who had appointments for April 30, which was canceled, can come at the same time Monday.

Residents may make an appointment for testing online at www.aclink.org. In addition to the doctor’s prescription, residents must also provide proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, as well as the appointment confirmation.

As always, those who are unable to keep their appointments are asked to cancel so that others will have an opportunity to be tested.
