'No threat' for EHT schools as fake posts resurface

  • News

Egg Harbor Township schools are under no viable threat, the high school's principal assured parents in email and robocalls released Thursday.

"It has been brought to our attention that there are pictures circulating on social media platforms recently and continue to be reposted," Principal Jacki Carugno wrote. "We want to assure you there is no viable threat to any school within the EHT School District."

Township police are monitoring the situation, she said.

There are no credible threats, police confirm.

It appears the posts may be false ones that had been shared a while ago that had no local connection.

The administration addressed the student body about "misinformation being circulated on social media platforms," Assistant Principal Tom Biggins said in a follow-up email sent to parents Thursday afternoon. "It is crucial for us all to understand the impact of sharing unverified information, especially when it relates to the safety and security of our students and staff.  We urged all students to refrain from reposting any information that they are not certain about or that may cause unnecessary concern among their peers."

He also warned that students who are found to repost the information instead of bringing it to the attention of the administration or proper authority will be disciplined appropriately.

"This is to ensure that we maintain a safe and supportive environment for everyone within our school community," he wrote.

Biggins expressed gratitude to students who did bring the information to their attention.

"Their proactive approach in bringing such matters to our attention is commendable and plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of our school community," he wrote.

The district students had a half-day Thursday and then are off Friday for staff in-service.
