Atlantic City man with pending drug cases jailed on gun charges

  • Crime Courts

An Atlantic man with two pending drug cases in the past year is now jailed on gun charges.

Semaj Poteat, 23, was released on summonses in his prior drug cases, meaning he did not go to the jail at all.

This time he was the target of a monthlong investigation led by Detective Troy Grams that brought police to the first block of South Kentucky Avenue with a search warrant Thursday, Capt. Kevin Fair said.

Poteat, who previously was listed as living in Georgia, had an outstanding warrant, and was taken into custody as he left the apartment, according to the report.

Detectives found Laquanda Barley and Tyjur Blocker inside, along with a loaded handgun, 14 grams of cocaine, more than 15 grams of heroin, 29 bags of heroin and paraphernalia used to package and distribute narcotics, Fair said. There was also more than $1,400 in cash seized.

Poteat was first arrested last March, when he was a passenger during a car stop.

At that time, police allegedly found him in possession of about 54 grams of suspected crack cocaine, six grams of suspected heroin and $730 in cash. He was released on a summons.

He was arrested again five months later when nine people were charged with drugs. All nine were released on summonses.

All three were charged with drug and gun offenses, including possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense, possession of a large-capacity magazine and possession of hollow-point ammunition.

They are in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
