Atlantic City police made two arrests and seized a loaded handgun during a traffic stop Friday.
Officers Alberto Valles and Christopher Dodson stopped a motor vehicle at about 11:15 a.m. at Virginia Avenue and Route 30, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
While speaking with the driver, whose name was not released, the officers smelled marijuana, according to the release.
Sharif Williams, 22, a passenger in the car, got out and was found with 40 grams of marijuana packaged for sale, Fair said. Williams tried to resist arrest, but was quickly placed into custody, according to the report.
While searching him, Valles found a loaded handgun in Williams’ pants, Fair said. A second passenger, 35-year-old Samar Smiley, was arrested after he was found to have an active arrest warrant.
Both men are from the city.
Williams was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public zone, possession with the intent to distribute in a school zone, possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.
He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Smiley was charged with contempt of court and released on a summons.
