Off-duty state trooper tends to crash victim with makeshift tourniquet

  • News

An off-duty state trooper helped save a car crash victim by fashioning a tourniquet using a tree branch and a T-shirt on Monday.
Trooper Kenneth Minnes was on the Atlantic City Expressway in Gloucester Township at about 2:40 p.m., when he saw a serious car crash, according to State Police.
A car had traveled off the road and struck several trees, police said. Other motorists had gotten victims out of the car, but Minnes worked with them to get the driver and passenger away from the smoking car.
Minnes then determined that the passenger’s heavily bleeding arm needed a tourniquet, and fashioned a makeshift one.
A short time later, advanced emergency personnel arrived and airlifted the occupants to Cooper Medical Center, police said.
“Despite just graduating the State Police Academy last year, Trooper Minnes displayed the poise of a veteran and his decisive actions helped save the victims' lives,” State Police said.
