Atlantic City police have charged 95 people in connection with rioting and looting that followed a peaceful protest May 31.
The protest sparked by the death of George Floyd lasted hours without incident. But as it ended, individuals began smashing windows at businesses along Atlantic Avenue and along the city's Tanger Outlets at The Walk.
There were 57 stores who had property damaged and merchandise stolen.
Seventeen people were arrested that day.
Police Chief Henry White then created a task force to investigate and charge those responsible.
That investigation included going over thousands of hours of video coverage from public and private cameras and those shared across social media.
It also included looking into burglaries of businesses that happened in the following days, where individuals took plywood off the stores and stole merchandise.
On June 30, police released a packet that included pictures of more than 200 suspects.
Several individuals who saw those photos turned themselves in, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
They have now charged 95, including 13 juveniles.
“The Atlantic City Police Department has remained steadfast in our support of those who exercise their First Amendment rights, including the right to peacefully protest, however, we will not idly standby as individuals commit crimes against our City,” White said. “Those that think they can come to Atlantic City and commit crimes that directly impact our businesses and residents will be held accountable."
Despite many insisting at the time that most of those involved were from out of the area, 61 of those charged are Atlantic City residents.
Most of the others are from Atlantic County, including 10 from Pleasantville, five from Egg Harbor Township, four from Mays Landing, three from Margate, two from Ventnor and one each from Absecon, Brigantine, Galloway Township, Linwood and Somers Point.
“I congratulate the Atlantic City Police Department for their tireless work in investigating the criminal activity that occurred in the city in May,” Mayor Marty Small said. “I want all residents and businesses in Atlantic City, as well as all visitors to our community, to know that Atlantic City will never accept or tolerate the kind of lawlessness that occurred at that time, and that everyone who was involved in the destruction of property and other illegal activity will be prosecuted vigorously and to the fullest extent of the law.
"We are very proud of the businesses in our city and we will continue to afford them every possible protection from any conduct of this kind,” he added.
The investigation continues, White said.
"Although we are announcing these charges today, this investigation will remain open until we can identify every person on our list," he said. "We greatly appreciate the support of the community in providing tips that greatly assisted this investigation.”
