A Camden County man released from prison in June was arrested with a gun and 500 bags of heroin after fleeing an Atlantic City car stop, police said.
Shamar Scott was the first of two car stops within an hour Wednesday that led to drugs and guns, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
Officers Wahab Malik and Enrique Badillo stopped Scott's car at 12:37 a.m. at Indiana and Pacific avenues.
That is when Scott ran from the vehicle and tried to hide in the first block of North Indiana Avenue, according to the report.
He was arrested without further incident.
The officers found a loaded handgun in the driver's side door compartment along with heroin, according to the charges.
Scott, 25, of Blackwood, was paroled from South Woods State Prison in June, after being jailed on a burglary charge, Department of Corrections records show.
That incident happened about a year after Scott was released from prison in a robbery and drug case.
He is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute and obstruction of justice. He also has motor vehicle summonses.
Scott will be sent to the Atlantic County Justice Facility once medically cleared from a pre-existing condition, Fair said.
About an hour after Scott's arrest, Officer Jonathan Figueroa stopped a vehicle at Marshall Avenue and Wine Street, after recognizing the driver as someone he previously stopped that didn't have a driver’s license, according to the report.
While speaking with the occupants, Figueroa allegedly smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.
The officer found a bag that had a mason jar with marijuana and a loaded handgun, Fair said.
The bag belonged to the vehicle’s passenger, Roni Cruz, who was arrested. The driver, whose name was not released, was given a motor vehicle summons.
Cruz, 20, of Atlantic City, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
He was released on a summons with a future court date.
