Somers Point pair caught on camera in arson of home

  • News

Cameras captured a Somers Point couple several times as they shopped for supplies and then set fire to a home while a family of three slept inside, according the affidavit obtained by BreakingAC.

Faith Tompkins, 18, and DeShaun Howard, 21, purchased gasoline and bottles to put it in before she drove him to the home in the 100 block of Dawes Avenue, the affidavit of probable cause states.

Howard was acquainted with the family, Detective Pete Burns writes in the filing. But it is not clear why he allegedly targeted the home.

Howard allegedly enlisted Tompkins to help him. She drove him to the home and helped douse the foundation with gasoline before setting it on fire just before 4 a.m. Wednesday, the affidavit claims.

The family was able to get out without injury. The full extent of the damage has not been made public, but it was more than $2,000, according to the charges.

Tompkins and Howard were arrested the next day, and are in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting detention hearings.

They are charged with aggravated arson, conspiracy to commit aggravated arson, criminal mischief and conspiracy to commit criminal mischief.

NOTE: The Atlantic County Justice Facility does not release mugshots under a previous order by the former prosecutor.
