Margate firefighter, West Deptford man pleaded guilty in multimillion-dollar health insurance scam

  • News

Two men set to go to trial next month in a multimillion-dollar health insurance scam pleaded guilty Thursday.

Margate Firefighter John Sher, 40, and Christopher Broccoli, 50, of West Deptford, each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud in Federal Court in Camden.

Sher and Broccoli were among seven people indicted in March 2019, along with now-admitted conspiracy leader William Hickman.

Sher’s brother Margate Firefighter Michael Sher previously pleaded guilty in the case.

Another brother, Thomas Sher — also a Margate firefighter — is still set to go to trial next month.

John Sher and Broccoli were part of a criminal conspiracy in which state and local government employees were recruited and compensated to receive medically unnecessary compound prescription medications.

It caused the pharmacy benefits administrator to pay out millions of dollars for medically unnecessary compound prescription medications for individuals they recruited into the scheme. Sher received $327,897 and Broccoli received $150,315.

John Sher and Broccoli each face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense. Sentencing for Sher is scheduled for Dec. 5 and for Broccoli on Dec. 6.
