An Egg Harbor Township man is in jail after he allegedly burned a woman by setting her pants on fire near the Atlantic City International Airport.
The woman called police at about 4:41 Wednesday morning in distress, Capt. Cherie Burgan said.
Police responded to the area of Tilton Road and the airport circle. After an extensive search, the woman was found in a remote area off the high-tension powerlines between Tilton Road and the Atlantic City Expressway, Burgan said.
The woman told police she was assaulted and burned with a pair of her pants that had been set on fire by the accused, according to the report.
The suspect also smashed out a window in the victim’s vehicle.
The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment, and a follow-up investigation was conducted, Burgan said.
John Simpson, 34, was found at about 9:13 Wednesday morning, and taken into custody without incident.
He is charged with aggravated assault, arson and criminal mischief.
The two do know each other, but police would not elaborate on their relationship.
It was not a random act, Burgan said.
Simpson is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing.
