A Pleasantville police officer rescued an elderly driver after the man's car caught fire following an accident.
Police and firefighters responded to the parking lot of a business at Delilah Road and Atlantic Avenue at 1:18 p.m. for the report of some trapped in a burning vehicle, Capt. Matt Hartman said.
Detective Adam Brownlee arrived to find the engine of a car fully engulfed and the fire spreading to the passenger side.
Someone was trying to get the driver out, but the man was resisting.
Brownlee moved the unidentified Good Samaritan to safety, reached into the car and put it in park, Hartman said. He then got the man out.
The man, whose name was not released, appeared to be having a medical emergency, according to the report.
The car, a white Chevy Cobalt, left the roadway and struck a parked Lincoln SUV and became wedged against it with the accelerator fully depressed, according to the report. This led to the tire melting and catching fire, causing both vehicles to ignite.
The vehicles eventually seperated and the Cobalt rolled backward several feet.
Pleasantville Fire Department personnel extinguished the blaze and the male driver was treated by TriCare EMS and AtlantiCare Paramedics.
