"The contributing factor was the generator on the second-floor porch," Fire Chief Scott Evans said.
Off-duty Battalion Chief Billy Rodgers was first on the scene of the blaze in that destroyed the apartments above the A&B store at Ventnor and Bartram avenues.Evans estimated the damage at about at about $400,000.
Ten people were displaced and five firefighters hospitalized, most for heat exhaustion.
"The heat is really starting to take its toll," Evans said as work continued Thursday. "(We called in) additional firefighters to rotate the personnel."
A family dog was found dead in a third-floor bathroom.
Two of the residents work at the Claridge Hotel, said co-workers, who asked for donations of clothing and other items.
A GoFundMe page was also set up by a relative.
