A Cape May Court House postal carrier was sentenced to a year in federal prison Tuesday for a scheme to steal and convert hundreds of blank U.S. Postal Service money orders for nearly $200,000.
Jonel Normil, 26, of Little Egg Harbor Township, previously pleaded guilty in Newark federal court to one count of conspiring to embezzle, convert to his use and the use of others the money orders.
He admitted using his position to steal the money orders from post offices in Cape May Courthouse and Stone Harbor, where he would also drop off and pick up mail as part of his job.
Normil would give the money orders to other conspirators, who made them look legitimate with dollar values of $900 or $1,000, he admitted. They then would be deposited in bank accounts or cashed at post offices in New Jersey, New York and Georgia.
In addition to 12 months in prison, Normil also will have three years of supervised release.
