A mattress fire caused the evacuation of a Pleasantville apartment building Tuesday night.
There were no injuries.
Pleasantville police and firefighters responded to 49 S. Main St. at 7:23 p.m., and found heavy smoke on the fifth floor.
Pleasantvile Police Squad 2 coordinated the evacuation with fire personnel, including carrying disabled residents down stairwells, Police Capt. Matt Hartman said.
Fire Department Shift 1, under the direction of Battalion Chief Ken Crawford, made entry to apartment 514, and discovered a mattress fire in the bedroom which they quickly extinguished with the assistance of the building's sprinkler system, placing it under control at 7:35pm.
The fire damage was contained to the original apartment but water damage was reported in apartments on the lower floors.
"The firefighters and police officers that responded to this high rise apartment fire, a call we all dread, acted with professionalism and speed and averted what could have been a much more tragic situation and for that we commend them," Hartman said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by FCI/Battalion Chief Gene Wellington.
