The Atlantic City Police Department wants to make sure residents know they will continue to patrol the city's streets regardless of actions taken by the state.
PBA President Matt Rogers said he wanted to address rumors "that outside forces were preparing for a job action by members of this union."
"That is absolutely not even a consideration," he said Monday. "We take our profession very seriously. We are offended that those who have any contact with us would think for a second we would jeopardize the safety of this city over a dispute over compensation or treatment from the state.
"Our employers are the citizens and visitors of this great city," he added. "We are honored to serve them and will continue to do so no matter what happens to us."
The state, which has increased its powers over the city, has suggested nearly halving the Fire Department and taking police below pre-casino levels,
Mayor Don Guardian previously said.
Cuts to salaries and benefits have also been discussed.
"Any action the state takes against our department we won't take out on the residents," Rogers said.
Currently, there are about 278 police officers and 225 firefighters. The state suggests 250 for police and cutting 100 firefighting positions.
