A man who fled State Police custody en route to the Atlantic County Justice Facility early Sunday morning is a fugitive from Georgia who allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of tools from a former employer.
Daniel Newman, 22, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was arrested at the Golden Nugget on Saturday night for thefts in the casino district, according to police.
He bailed out of an unmarked State Police car just before 4 a.m., as it was turning into the jail in Mays Landing. Newman was
found about 12 hours later at the Festival Mall in Hamilton Township.
Newman is a fugitive from Georgia, according to jail records.
He was charged with theft in October, when his former boss reported that thousands of dollars in tools were taken from his unlocked truck.
Stone tiler Kenneth Kahle told police that Newman, a former employee, had entered his unlocked truck overnight in Tucker, Georgia, and taken more than a dozen tools totaling $6,000, according to a report with the Gwinnett County Police Department obtained by
BreakingAC.
Newman is currently in the Atlantic County Justice Facility without bail.
