Dr. Kauffman's license temporarily suspended after armed standoff

  • News

An Egg Harbor Township doctor's license has been temporarily suspended after an armed standoff with police serving a search warrant at his medical practice earlier this month.
Dr. James Kauffman is currently in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on gun charges after he pulled a gun and threatened to kill himself June 13.
"Dr. Kauffman's conduct, followed by his criminal arrest, demonstrates imminent danger to the public," Attorney General Christopher Porrino said in announcing the suspension.
Kauffman agreed to the temporary suspension pending resolution of his criminal charges and other conditions set by the state Board of Medical Examiners.
"In addition to resolving his criminal case, Dr. Kauffman will also have to undergo professional evaluation and be deemed fit to resume practice before the board would consider reinstating his license," Porrino said.
"Protecting the welfare of the public is paramount," said Steve Lee, director of the Division of Consumer Affairs. "By obtaining the temporary suspension of Dr. Kauffman's license, the board has upheld its duty to safeguard patients and enforce the standards of the medical profession."
Kauffman's attorney, Ed Jacobs, has filed an appeal in the criminal case.
