An Ocean County sheriff's officer was arrested for allegedly stealing cocaine used to train canines for his own personal use.
Lt. John C. Adams, 40, is charged with official misconduct, theft and cocaine possession, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato and Sheriff Michael Matronardy announced Wednesday.
The 17-year veteran was assigned to the K-9 Unit and legitimately gained possession of cocaine May 15, 2015, according to the report.
But from that time to Feb. 11 of this year, cocaine went missing from where it was kept for training in the Sheriff's Department, the complaint charges.
Adams surrendered himself at noon Wednesday at the Toms River Police Department. He was issued a summons, and a first appearance will be scheduled in Superior Court. He is suspended from his position.
