The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death of a man shot during a confrontation with police.
Toms River officers were called Tuesday to follow up on a report of a person believed to be in need of mental health services, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
There was a physical altercation after they made contact with the 56-year-old while male at about 12:30 p.m., according to the preliminary investigation. A service weapon was discharged and the man died as a result.
There were no details released about how the weapon was fired.
An autopsy will be performed by the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office and a full report regarding the cause and manner of death will be determined.
The office will release a full account of the what happened after everything has been confirmed, according to a release from the Prosecutor's Office. The current focus is on the investigation and processing of the scene.
