Five years after a popular radio host was found slain in her Linwood home, a request has been made for her husband’s DNA.
April Kauffman, 47, was found shot inside her bedroom May 10, 2012. No one has been arrested, although her daughter has claimed in a civil lawsuit that her stepfather, Dr. James Kauffman, was involved.
Kauffman, an endocrinologist in Egg Harbor Township, denied the allegations in a response to the lawsuit and several times through his attorney, Ed Jacobs.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office has never named a suspect in the case nor released much information.
But a motion has been filed to compel Dr. Kauffman to submit his DNA, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner confirmed to BreakingAC.
“I am happy to hear that there is movement within the case,” said Kimberly Pack, April Kauffman’s only child. “All I pray for each day is to have the answers, closure and justice for my mom.”
She said she didn’t know of the request until watching it on the news.
Defense attorney Jacobs said he couldn’t comment on the issue — and that ethical standards indicate Tyner shouldn’t have either.
“Applications of that nature, under our court rules, are to be under seal and impounded,” he told BreakingAC. “No lawyer on either side should be making any comments.”
When asked about the motion hearing — set for May 26 — Jacobs replied: "That's my comment."
The day was a difficult one for Pack, as she marked another year without an arrest in the case.
She said her two sons, seeing her hold back tears Wednesday morning, hugged her extra tight and looked her in the eye saying, “I love you, Mom.”
“I want to be able to breathe again and for this nightmare to finally end,” Pack said. “I remain optimistic, hopeful and patient.”
