A Good Samaritan was critically injured when he helped a woman being assaulted by her boyfriend in Hamilton Township, police said.
Calvin Wiggins was allegedly hitting his girlfriend along Route 40 near Cantillon Boulevard at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday, when a man passing by saw the violent incident and stopped to help, police said.
As the unnamed man got out of his car, Wiggins allegedly punched him in the face. The victim fell to the ground and suffered critical injuries, police said.
He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus in Atlantic City, where he remains in critical condition.
A second vehicle stopped to help and struck a street sign, puncturing the fuel tank, police said. The resulting fuel spill closed the area for a couple of hours Thursday morning.
Wiggins, 24, of Sicklerville, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and possession of marijuana.
He is lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on a parole detainer.
The Mays Landing Rescue Squad, Mays Landing Fire Department and AtlantiCare Paramedics assisted at the scene.
