Atlantic City shooting investigation leads to three arrests, two guns and drugs

  • News
An investigation into shots fired led to three arrests, two guns and a large amount of drugs in Atlantic City, police said. A ShotSpotter alert at 4:17 a.m. Friday brought officers to the first block of South California Avenue, where they found two vehicles had been struck by gunfire, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. An investigation by Atlantic City’s Violent Crimes Unit and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office led to them to identify three suspects all from Atlantic City. Eugene McKethan, 32, was arrested in the 2700 block of Pacific Avenue by Sgt. James Herbert and Officer Daniel Arra. A second suspect, Johnny Morgan, was arrested when he went into the Public Safety Building to post McKethan’s bail, Fair said. Anthony Hamlett, 38, was arrested by Sgt. Daniel Kallen and Prosecutor’s Office Detective Eric Price  in a motel room in the 3000 block of Pacific Avenue. As a result of the arrests, police got warrants to search Morgan’s apartment and a vehicle used by all three, Fair said. Detectives found a loaded handgun in the car. Inside the apartment, they found another loaded handgun — which had been reported stolen — along with numerous rounds of ammunition for both guns, 11.3 grams of cocaine, 30 bags of heroin, 2.2 ounces of unpackaged heroin and the materials used to package the heroin into individual bags. The handgun and heroin were located in a room were detectives found an infant in a Pack ‘n Play.  There were also three other juveniles in the apartment, Fair said. The Division of Child Protection and Permanency was notified and responded to the apartment. All three men were charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, conspiracy, receiving stolen property and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. McKethan, pictured above, was released from prison in 2014, after serving about four months on a drug charge, Department of Corrections records show. McKethan and Morgan were each charged with two counts on the weapons charges. Morgan, 34, was additionally charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession with intent to distribute, along with possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense and endangering the welfare of children. All three males were taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
