An Absecon man was arrested Wednesday after fleeing detectives with a handgun, Atlantic City police said.
Torrence Thompson ran when Detectives Nicholas Berardis, Brian Hambrecht and Anthony Abrams tried to stop him at about 7:15 a.m. in the 700 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
As Thompson ran, he removed a handgun from his jacket pocket, according to the report.
Ignoring the officers’ commands to stop, he continued running with the gun before throwing it under a vehicle in the 700 block of Green Street, Fair said.
Thompson kept running, and was found hiding in the yard of a residence.
The handgun found under the vehicle was loaded with hollow-point bullets, according to the report.
Thompson, 30, is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon , possession of hollow-point ammunition, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.
He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Thompson’s criminal history dates to at least 2007, when he pleaded guilty to a heroin possession charge, according to court records.
The next year, he was arrested with a gun, and found guilty by a jury. He was sentenced to seven years in prison, with parole ineligibility for five years.
