A Pleasantville man is in critical condition after he was struck by a car Thursday.
Officers were called to the Black Horse Pike and New Road at 5:41 p.m., and found Catarino Marquez, 48, lying unconscious and not breathing in the roadway, Capt. Matt Hartman said. He had severe head injuries.
Marquez was crossing outside of the crosswalk and was in the outside lane when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Rolando Garcia, 45, of Brigantine, who was headed west on the pike, according to the report.
TriCare EMS and AtlantiCare paramedics responded, treated Marquez and took him to the Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus. He remains in critical condition.
Pleasantville Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the initial call and remained on scene to assist police with the investigation.
Southbound New Road from Washington Avenue and westbound on the Black Horse Pike from Chestnut Avenue were closed for about 1½ hours for the investigation.
The crash is being investigated by Captain Frank Balles of the Traffic Safety Unit.
