Punctured gas line causes evacuation of Atlantic City school

  • News
Students at New York Avenue School and residents in the surrounding area had to be evacuated Friday morning due to a gas leak, Atlantic City police said. At about 11:10 a.m., a construction crew working on Tennessee and Adriatic avenues broke through a 2-inch line, Fire Chief Scott Evans said. "We evacuated New York Avenue School and approximately 50 additional residences," Evans said. There was a four-block area affected, with residents who were downwind of the leak told to close their windows, he said. Five fire companies responded and stretched hand lines to do vapor suppression, as well as provide protection for the workers, Evans said The gas company was able to fix the problem, and the students were back in school within about an hour.
